WEIGHT REGAIN – IT CAN BE A REAL ROLLER COASTER

Weight Regain - Can Be A Roller Coaster

THE UPS AND DOWNS AND UPS AND EVEN HIGHER-UPS

Gaining and regaining weight can be a scary ride. You lose weight, and then whoosh, the numbers on the scale shoot up. So you hold your breath and determine to lose it. 20 pounds up. 20 down. 30 up. 15 down. You’ve lost and gained more pounds than you can remember. It adds up. Up is a downer. Down makes you feel up. The numbers go up. Hope shoots down. According to studies, anywhere from 80% to 95% of people who lose weight regain it. And when you regain lost weight, you’re actually going to gain a higher percentage of fat mass than you started with. You want to scream.

OFF THE RAILS; CALORIES DROPPING PRECIPITOUSLY

Crash diets, are more like crash and burn. (So don’t burn all your “fat” clothes). One reason weight regain happens after some of these crash diets, is because the often extreme diet responsible for the initial weight loss is too difficult to sustain long term. To compound the issue, many crash dieters can become preoccupied with food and disconnected from their internal hunger and fullness cues, which can also lead to weight regain. As soon as you start losing weight, your body suddenly wants it all back. It can’t tell the difference between intentional weight loss and being struck by famine. So it goes into survivor mode, lowering your metabolism and stimulating your appetite to preserve fat stores. Not for the faint-hearted.

IT DOES A LOT MORE THAN SEND CHILLS UP YOUR SPINE

Weight lifts and plunges can lead to some frightening health issues, too.

Your heart races. Literally. All the time. Which elevates your blood pressure and can put you at an elevated risk for heart disease and strokes.

Your cholesterol skyrockets. High LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, or high levels of triglycerides (Dyslipidemia) make things even worse.

It gets you to your bones. Osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.

You feel like you can’t move. Body pain and difficulty with physical functioning.

Your insides feel inside out. You can’t sleep. You can end up deep in depression or other mood disorders.

You feel like you’ve run out of energy. Type 2 diabetes is an impairment in the way the body regulates and uses sugar (glucose) as a fuel.

Chronic weight loss and gain can actually lead to obesity, which is linked to more than 60 chronic diseases.

YOUR HORMONES ARE IN THE HEAD CAR

Hormones are the tiny messengers in your body that carry information through your bloodstream to all the other parts of your body. They tell organs and tissues what to do, how to do it, and for how long. Every day, the brain receives signals from a team of hormones produced by different parts of the body, such as your stomach and intestines, called appetite hormones. Both your brain and these hormones contribute to the reasons you eat—for hunger, for pleasure, or simply because you decide to.

THE HUNGRY GAMES

The team of hunger hormones lifting and plunging to make you keep losing and regaining the weight you lost include:

Cortisol
Called the “stress hormone”, increased levels can cause an increase in appetite and cravings for sweets, high-fat and salty foods.

Leptin
Leptin is the “satiety hormone” which is supposed to tell your brain you don’t need to eat and can burn calories at a normal rate.

Ghrelin
As Leptin levels decrease in response to calorie deprivation, levels of ghrelin, considered the “hunger hormone”, increase, stimulating appetite, increasing food intake, and making weight loss all the more challenging.

Insulin
This is a reason why you may feel the instinct to eat “comfort food” like chocolate or ice cream during stressful times.

Thyroid
When a “sluggish” or underactive thyroid makes less of its hormones, your metabolism slows down so you won’t burn off calories as quickly.

Estrogen and Progesterone
When one or both levels fall, you will not only have a difficult time losing weight, but you will see your weight increase, despite your best efforts.

Testosterone
Unexplained weight gain is one of the first symptoms men experience, as low testosterone can affect how your body stores fat, especially around your stomach.

LOSE. LOSE MORE. LOSE MORE THAN YOU THOUGHT POSSIBLE. STAY THERE. FROM THEREON.

NEW YEAR. NEW YOU. LOSE WEIGHT NOW.

2020 is finally gone and it is time to get rid of that 2020 “20” and lose weight. In 2020, the ball dropped in March. It was crazy. There we were, cocooned in oversized sweats. Searching for a new pet. Hunting for elusive toilet paper. Couldn’t spend time with loved ones. Egg and Cheese McMuffins with crispy hash browns and a side of Griddles became the Breakfast of Champions. Our minds wandered aimlessly, and had to ask for directions home. But it is 2021 and time to move on, make new year’s resolutions. But this year counts more than ever. We need to start fresh, lose weight, learn new things, look and feel younger, take better care of our health. And, Thrive Health Solutions is here to help your 2021 thrive.

BROKEN RESOLUTIONS CAN MAKE US FEEL BROKEN ALL OVER

Let’s take a look at what could make keeping our resolutions as seemingly difficult as Congress arriving at a Stimulus Package.

When it comes to losing weight:

  • Grubhub and DoorDash have become family
  • I ran past the Covid “15” months ago, and that was my only cardio

When it comes to learning new things:

  • Every day is cloudy with a good chance of constant brain fog
  • I wish I could social distance from depression

When it comes to looking and feeling younger:

  • Mirror, mirror on the…nope, not looking in any mirror soon
  • My “not tonight, hon” has turned to don’t bother asking

And finally, when it comes to taking better care of your health:

  • My sleep is so insufficient I’m not just counting sheep, I’m naming them
  • I could be woke if I wasn’t so exhausted

TURN NEGATIVITY TO POSITIVITY

Forget resolutions. For every negative thought and behavior, make a new, positive… let’s call it “goal”.  Think, “I hope I will, I have the will, I know I will.” And keep the message on repeat.

When it comes to losing weight

  • Never step on the scale blindfold again
  • Fill your plate with motivation. Have seconds. Even thirds

When it comes to learning new things:

  • Drop guilt at the airport with a one-way ticket
  • Aim for a glass that’s more than half full (and not with tequila or gin)

When it comes to looking and feeling younger:

  • Set up your cells for success
  • Tell wear-and-tear where to go

And when it comes to taking better care of your health:

  • Put the brakes on stress
  • Make your immune system soar
  • Turn your inner athlete into a beast

And let the caring, understanding medical experts at Thrive Health Solutions help you turn things around.

ALEXA CAN’T BALANCE YOUR HORMONES

But the experts at Thrive Health Solution can. Hormones are your body’s chemical messengers swimming with determination throughout your bloodstream, telling your cells and organs what to do. When they are out of balance, the messages they send are chaotic and can cause health issues from hair loss to bone loss, depression to diabetes, erectile dysfunction to heart disease. But with BHRT pellets and other therapies, we’ve got you covered.

NEW YEAR. NEW YOU.

That’s our number one goal at Thrive. And we’ve got a number of ways to help you get there beyond just hormone balancing. Our medical weight loss options, immune health, and anti-aging treatments are all cutting edge. Well-researched. Innovative. Safe. Effective. Affordable. You get results. You get confidence. You get a New You.

THERE’S EVEN MORE WE’VE GOT IN STORE FOR YOU.

Literally, our online store makes it easy for you to take home a healthy taste of some of the ways Thrive can help you move forward, get fit, and feel like you’re ready to take on anything this strange new world can toss at you. We’ll help you thrive in 2021. And 2. And 3. Well, you get it…A good example? Instead of masking up when you go to the kitchen, our proprietary ThriveSlim™ and ThriveTrim™ capsules can help you resist the dreaded Covid-carbs, forgo the binge snacking while Netflix binging, and lose the weight you want without feeling deprived.

So if you want to lose weight, feel younger or whatever your health needs, Thrive is all about helping you be the best you can be. Call or text Thrive Health Solutions at (303) 790-8446 for an appointment now. Happy New Year. And Happy New You.

Anti-Obesity Drug AOD-9604; THE WEIGHT LOSS PEPTIDE YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR.

PEPTIDE AOD 9604. HUH?

Oh, these scientists…just can’t speak human-talk. They can make this stuff more daunting than the SAT’s. Peptide AOD 9604, is a modified form of amino acids 176-191. Lost yet? Let’s start with a simple explanation and then go from there. AOD; Anti-Obesity Drug. (The 9604 part even Google couldn’t spit out) In 1990, a professor in Australia developed it with the intent of finding an anti-obesity drug that had true fat burning effects. Which brings us to the topic of fat and why a bunch of us get that way.

WEIGH IN ON THIS

AOD 9604 today isn’t just about treating obese people. 32.5 percent of American adults are overweight. And what’s considered overweight varies from person to person. It all has to do with something called Body Mass Index (BMI) which is a bit complicated to get into here, especially as we are already trying to get into something called AOD 9604. Now about this “overweight” issue. This, you know all about. Puffy cheeks. Multiple chins. Fat that hangs precipitously over sweat pant elastic waistbands. It’s a love, no, make that lust affair with food. Since Covid 19 started it’s gotten worse as we’ve become fast friends with Doordash, Grubhub and Uber Eats for uber fat and fabulous Colorado goodies. Fast. Willpower has gone by the wayside as the numbers on the scale creep up. Help! Keep reading.

THE INSIDE ON PEPTIDES

If you’ve been hearing about peptides for weight loss, you’ve been hearing right. So, a little peptides 101 here. Peptides are small proteins that communicate with the body in distinct ways, very similarly to hormones. They regulate most every known process and system in the body. Including the way your body metabolizes fat.

GO FOR THE BURN

Back to anti-obesity drug, AOD 9604 and its role in burning that unwanted fat. Here’s a list of all that it can do. This you’re going to like:

  • Drastically reduces body fat
  • Increases calorie burn at high levels
  • Triggers fat release and causes break down (destruction) of your fat cells
  • Boosts your metabolism for long term
  • Reduces visceral fat (under muscle fat)
  • Prevents non-fatty foods from turning into body fat (no food storage weight gain from eating)
  • Decreases your appetite and cravings
  • No negative effects on blood sugar levels or tissue growth
  • Proven to have a direct reduction of belly fat
  • May help with bone and cartilage repair
  • Helps with muscle building and preserving

BELLY FAT; THE BADEST OF BAD FAT

Saddlebags and ballooning bellies are not equivalent. When it comes to body fat, location counts, and each year brings new evidence that the fat lying deep within the abdomen is more perilous than the fat you can pinch with your fingers. In most people, about 90% of body fat is subcutaneous, the kind that lies in a layer just beneath the skin. If you poke your belly, the fat that feels soft is subcutaneous fat. The remaining 10% — called visceral or intra-abdominal fat — lies out of reach, beneath the firm abdominal wall. It’s found in the spaces surrounding the liver, intestines, and other organs. Getting rid of your belly bulge is important for more than just vanity’s sake. Regardless of your overall weight, having a large amount of belly fat increases your risk of everything from type 2 diabetes to high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease and even colorectal cancer.

        LOVE YOUR “AFTER”

At Thrive Health Solutions, their medical experts have been using the anti-obesity drug, AOD 9604 to great success with patients of all ages and sizes. Both men, and women. Thrive understands. That’s why they work closely with each patient. One on one, you get their full attention. Thrive will be there with you along every step of your weight loss journey, helping in every way possible. Your overall health is as important to them as your weight loss. DIET PILLS; ONLINE, OVER-THE-COUNTER AND OUT OF LUCK

THE TRUTH ABOUT THOSE PILLS YOU MAY BE POPPING

If you’re overweight, you’re not alone. In 2020, more than 70% of men and women are either overweight or obese, leading to a weight loss market worth a record $72 billion. The appeal of being able to lose huge amounts of weight fast is hard to resist. Which is why the temptation to use diet pills is so strong. But are the products you find online and over-the-counter safe? Let’s start with “absolutely not”, and go from there.

        FDA? NO WAY

The makers of dietary supplements are responsible for ensuring the safety of their product and making honest claims about possible benefits. But because they aren’t regulated or required to be approved by the FDA, diet pill manufacturers can claim to be or do almost anything and no one can say otherwise. Even the wildest claims are never checked for accuracy. So where does that put you?

        WHAT’S IN THESE THINGS ANYWAY?

Diet pills often use the word “natural” or “herbal”.  Says them, as we said above. Example: before being banned by the FDA in 2004, many diet supplements contained ephedra, an evergreen plant found in Central Asia and Mongolia–an herbal stimulant that was deemed too dangerous, in too many ways. Despite this, some diet pills still illegally use ephedra in their products. So much for “natural”. Actually, many diet pills contain a mind-numbing list of questionable substances. Some contain caffeine, capsaicin found in chili peppers, or chitosan, a fiber like substance derived from crustacean shells. Before you think “oh, that doesn’t sound too awful”, we’ll continue. Some diet pills have hidden ingredients that include antidepressants, steroids, pesticides, laxatives, anti-seizure medicines and toxic heavy metals. Because the manufacturers don’t have to list these ingredients on their product labels, dieters have no way of knowing that they were ingesting any of it.

IT’S ENOUGH TO MAKE YOU SICK

We’ll get right to some of the scary things that these thoroughly unproven pills can cause, because there’s no way around it:

        • Diarrhea
        • Kidney problems
        • Liver damage
        • Constipation
        • Vomiting
        • Rapid breathing
        • Seizures
        • Elevated blood pressure
        • Strokes
        • Heart attacks

And that is just the tip of the iceberg depending on the product and your personal health.

        SELLING THE SCAMS

You’ve all heard the call of the snake oil diet pill salesmen. Calls that aren’t just unrealistic, they’re unending. Mass emails, pop up ads on your devices. Here are some you might have come across: Lose 60 pounds in 3 weeks. The product is free—you just have to pay shipping. Buy 2 bottles, get the 3rd free. Limited time only. Give us your credit card and we’ll ship you this amazing product every month at a huge discount. 100% money-back guarantee. And on and on. Sound familiar? There are roughly 8,000 diet pills and supplements out there and many are just old formulations that just keep resurfacing. Create a new flashy label and packaging, slap a new catchy name on it, advertise using a Thesaurus of inspiring words and dig up some fake testimonials from thin people who never needed to lose weight in their life. Bam! You’ve got yourself an all new more expensive diet pill whose only reason for being is to prey on your insecurities, give you false hope and beef up their bottom lines. Just as a final note, to make it a bit more relatable, in recent TikTok ads, scammers used fake news articles that falsely claimed to be from CNN and Fox News to make it seem as if celebrities are promoting certain diet pills. If ever there were hoaxes, there are some doozies.

GET A TASTE OF INTERMITTENT FASTING

You hear the word “fasting” and it probably doesn’t leave a good taste in your mouth. Starvation. Depravation. And it couldn’t be good for you, right? Wrong. If you want to lose weight, intermittent fasting is fast becoming one of the best, healthiest ways to do it. If you struggle with your weight or just find your jeans hard to squeeze into, you’ve probably tried a lot of different diets. And there are some crazy ones out there; juice cleanses, the baby food diet, the vision diet (you eat everything while wearing blue-tinted glasses), even the clip-your-nose-while-you-eat-diet. Hey, we couldn’t make these up if we tried. And with most of them, you’ll quickly gain back what you lost just from even looking at a bagel.

A QUICK LOOK AT HOW INTERMITTENT FASTING WORKS

Intermittent Fasting (IF) is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. It doesn’t specify which foods you should eat but rather when you should eat them. Studies show that intermittent fasting can be a very powerful weight loss tool. By making you eat fewer meals, intermittent fasting can lead to an automatic reduction in calorie intake, but it also changes hormone levels to facilitate weight loss. In addition to lowering insulin and increasing growth hormone levels, it increases the release of the fat burning hormone norepinephrine. Because of these changes in hormones, short-term fasting may increase your metabolic rate by 3.6–14%. Keep in mind, though; the main reason for its success is that intermittent fasting helps you eat fewer calories overall. If you binge and eat massive amounts during your eating periods, you may not lose any weight at all.

INTERMITTENT FASTING; NOT JUST SUPER FAST, SUPER HEALTHY

While intermittent fasting helps you lose weight, just as importantly, it helps you gain some real health benefits to your entire body, including your brain. It can reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol, blood triglycerides, inflammatory markers, blood sugar and insulin resistance — all risk factors for heart disease. It can also stimulate certain brain hormones and may aid the growth of new nerve cells. It may even protect against Alzheimer’s disease.

FOUR WAYS TO MAKE INTERMITTENT FASTING WORK

There are four different methods of intermittent fasting. The options give you flexibility and allow you to choose the one that will be easiest for you to stick to:

        EAT-STOP-EAT

This involves eating nothing for 24 hours twice a week. It does not matter what days a person fasts or even when they begin. The only restriction is fasting must last for 24 hours and on non-consecutive days.

        WARRIOR DIET

This entails eating very little for 20 hours each day. A person fasting in this way consumes all their typical food intake in the remaining 4 hours. Eating a whole day’s worth of food in such a short time can make a person’s stomach quite uncomfortable. This is the most extreme fasting method, and a person new to fasting may not want to start with this method.

        16/8 (ALSO KNOWN AS LEANGAINS)

Originally created for weightlifters, 16/8 has gained popularity among other people who are interested in fasting. Unlike Eat-Stop-Eat and the Warrior Diet, fasting for 16/8 involves much shorter periods. For example, males who choose this method will fast for 16 hours and then eat what they want for the remaining 8 hours of the day. Females fast for 14 hours and eat what they want for the remaining 10 hours of the day. During the fast, a person must avoid eating any food but can drink as many no-calorie beverages as they like. Many people find the 16/8 method to be the simplest, most sustainable and easiest to stick to. Which is why it’s probably the most popular.

        ALTERNATE DAY FASTING; 5:2 METHOD

A person on the 5:2 method eats 500 to 600 calories on two non-consecutive days each week. Some alternate-day fasting regimens add in a third day of fasting each week. For the rest of the week, a person eats only the number of calories they burn during the day. Over time, this creates a calorie deficit that allows the person to lose weight.

THE HEALTHIEST CHOICE YOU COULD MAKE

It’s only natural that you might have questions about intermittent fasting; “Is skipping breakfast healthy? Will I feel sick? Will I be too weak to work? Can I take supplements while fasting?  Can I work out? Which method is right for me?” So where do you go to get real answers? Who can you trust to tell you what you need to know? To put what could seem complicated in language that’s easy to understand? That part is the easiest; Thrive HealthSolutions. Thrive specializes in medical weight loss and knows everything about helping you lose weight quickly and even more importantly, safely. With Thrive’s guidance, you can lose from ½ to 1 lb. daily. Without muscle loss, and without affects detrimental to your health. When we say “guidance”, it’s because everyone at Thrive will be there for you from your initial consultation throughout your weight loss journey. Your overall well-being is everything to us. But find out for yourself. Call Thrive for an appointment to find out about intermittent fasting now. You’ll quickly understand you couldn’t have made a smarter choice.

WEIGHT LOSS; THE RELENTLESS PURSUIT OF UNHAPPINESS

Why do so many peoples struggle with weight loss? Food is supposed to be good for us. Nourish us. Fuel our bodies to work the way they’re supposed to. But food has also become our tempters, lovers and at times, even enemies. We live in a world where perfection is held in often unnatural esteem. We spend millions in pursuit of weight loss, striving for Marvel Hero bodies. There are social media filters galore putting out images few can truly attain. Our cultural obsession with thinness gives rise to all or nothing thinking. Which has given rise to what can only be considered an epidemic of eating disorders. At least 30 million people of all ages and genders are affected by an eating disorder of some type. In every case, it’s a world of secret suffering seeking even the smallest amount of weight loss.

ANOREXIA; A HATE AFFAIR WITH FOOD

You see someone who seems to be all skin and bones and think; “anorexia”. You’re probably right. The term “anorexia” is derived from two Greek words, usually translated as “without appetite” — but that is something of a misnomer. Patients do not lose their appetite; they struggle to subdue it. Anorexics tend to unfavorably compare themselves to others, label every food as fattening, and catastrophize about weight gain. If they gain a pound, it’s the end of the world and nobody will like them. As a result, they starve themselves and to the point that they put their lives at risk. In the most severe cases, patients develop life-threatening complications, such as cardiac arrhythmias, kidney failure, and liver failure…all for what? Weight loss?

        BULIMIA; PURGING GOOD SENSE

Another food obsession; but unlike anorexia, bulimics tend to binge on large amounts of rich, calorie laden foods and then engage in behaviors to purge this food from their body. These behaviors can include self-induced vomiting or misuse of over the counter laxatives. Side effects of bulimia may include an inflamed and sore throat, swollen salivary glands, worn tooth enamel, tooth decay, acid reflux, irritation of the gut, severe dehydration, even strokes or heart attacks.

BINGE EATING; NO STOPPING THE DAMAGE

One of the primary signs of binge eating disorder is that the individual will consume an abnormally large amount of food within a short time, typically, a two-hour period. 10,000 to 20,000 calories of food may be consumed in one bout of bingeing. (And you worry about 1,800 calories.) People with binge eating disorder will frequently eat alone or in secret to avoid the embarrassment of others seeing how much they consume. It is also common for them to stockpile or hoard food to eat during these binge episodes.

WEIGHT LOSS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE

The eating disorders we’ve listed here are serious, without doubt. But when it comes to weight, everyone has their own emotional demons. Just feeling overweight is enough to make someone feel out of control, depressed and guilt ridden. As weight climbs, self-esteem plummets, and health deteriorates. People try everything for weight loss. Then try again. And again. And, well, you get the idea. You want real help with your weight loss? Instead of choosing a dozen designer donuts or gallon of rocky road, choose to see the medical weight loss professionals at Thrive Health Solutions. Thrive offers many individualized, highly successful and cutting-edge weight loss solutions. All medically developed and doctor guided. Weight Gain: You Lost It. You Regained It. How Did This Happen?

You’ve had weight loss. You’ve had weight gain. Doesn’t matter how much, you’re pretty happy with yourself. The scale isn’t your enemy anymore. Then suddenly, it seems (actually, it isn’t so sudden) the number on your scale inches up as the inches on your body expand. You shouldn’t really be that surprised. Once you’ve hit your goal weight and decide you’re “off” of your diet, the weight is going to come right back. You loosen up on healthy behaviors and dig into foods that previously had been on the no-fly list. Rice cakes give way to creamy risotto, steamed veggies give way to fried anything. The common thinking is that once you’ve lost the weight, the hard work is over. If you begin to beat yourself up and feel like a real failure, you’re in good company. Estimates suggest that anywhere from 80 – 95 percent of people who lose weight gain it back.

YO-YO DIETING; LOSE IT. GAIN IT. LOSE IT. GAIN IT. KEEP REPEATING.

Even worse than losing weight is when you have weight gain. When your weight has more ups and downs than a hotel elevator. This is what is called yo-yo dieting, also known as weight cycling. Apropos, as it’s a cycle of discontent. You find your closets have a range of sizes hanging woefully on the rods, your “skinny” jeans rotating with your “fat” jeans. If you need a good example of yo-yo dieting, just look at Oprah Winfrey, queen of the dieting roller coaster. Her 40-year weight loss struggle has played out on tv and covers of magazines for the world to see. She’s accomplished amazing things but keeping her weight off isn’t one of them. While being overweight often comes with some health issues, yo-yo dieting can lead to muscle loss, a higher body fat percentage and even an increased risk of diabetes, heart disease and higher blood pressure.

EVEN WHAT THE BIGGEST LOSERS LOST CAME BACK

Without question, the show “The Biggest Losers” was an astounding winner. People watched with awe, both mesmerized and inspired. But get this; researchers from the National Institute of Health followed 14 contestants who had participated in the “Biggest Loser” reality show. During the 30 weeks of the show, the contestants lost an average of over 125 pounds per person. But in the six years after the show, all but one had weight gain. They gained back most of their lost weight (some even more), despite continuing to diet and exercise.

        REGAINING WEIGHT LOSS; METABOLIC MELTDOWN

Sometimes regaining weight you’ve lost isn’t all your fault. As soon as you start losing weight, your body suddenly wants it all back. It can’t tell the difference between intentional weight loss and being struck by famine. It immediately goes into protective mode, lowering your metabolism and stimulating your appetite to preserve fat stores. Then there are hormones that can wreak havoc on your efforts to avoid weight gain. Your fat cells make a hormone called leptin. It tells your brain when you have enough fat stored up. As you lose weight, less fat means less leptin. That makes you hungry. And that can make your cravings skyrocket.

STAY A SUCCESS STORY If you want to lose weight, and more importantly avoid weight gain, fad diets or nothing but egg whites and lettuce leaves simply aren’t going to work. So, what are you supposed to do? A good place to start is at Thrive Health Solutions in Denver, CO. Thrive offers a doctor-supervised, integrated medical weight loss program uniquely designed to help you lose weight without feeling deprived. Thrive’s weight loss options include pharmaceutical HCG, custom-compounded fat-burning lipotropic injections, B12 injections and FDA approved appetite suppressants. The Keto Diet Denver: Bringing Home The Bacon

Ah, the Keto Diet. Halle Barry attributes her fifty-year old unbelievable body to it. (Saw it on Entertainment Tonight.)

To begin, what are the main differences between the Paleo and Keto (ketogenic) diets? Typically, a Keto Diet is even higher in fat than Paleo. While the Paleo Diet incorporates fruit and starchy vegetables, the Keto Diet doesn’t because they’re too high in carbs. A standard Keto Diet is 70-80 percent fat, 20 percent protein and about 5 percent carbs. When you eat less than 50 grams of carbs per day your body runs out of fuel it can use quickly. Then you start to break down protein and fat for energy which makes you lose weight. This is called ketosis. And here’s a fun fact about it; in the 1920s, the Keto Diet was originally designed not for weight loss, but for epilepsy. For reasons not entirely understood even today, fueling the body on primarily ketones reduced seizures. However, with the development of anti-seizure medications, few people with epilepsy rely on ketogenic diets today. Crazy, huh?

        Different Types of Ketogenic Diets

There are several versions of the ketogenic diet, including:

        • Standard ketogenic diet (SKD): This is a very low-carb, moderate-protein and high-fat diet. It typically contains 75% fat, 20% protein and only 5% carbs.
        • Cyclical ketogenic diet (CKD): This diet involves periods of higher-carb refeeds, such as 5 ketogenic days followed by 2 high-carb days.
        • Targeted ketogenic diet (TKD): This diet allows you to add carbs around workouts.
        • High-protein ketogenic diet: This is similar to a standard ketogenic diet, but includes more protein. The ratio is often 60% fat, 35% protein and 5% carbs.

However, only the standard and high-protein ketogenic diets have been studied extensively. Cyclical or targeted ketogenic diets are more advanced methods and primarily used by bodybuilders or athletes.

The Paleo Diet Denver: Getting Ancestral With It

The Paleo Diet. Heard of it. Never tried it. What is it really, anyway? A Paleo Diet is a dietary plan based on foods similar to what might have been eaten during the Paleolithic Era, which dates from approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago. Other names for a Paleo Diet include Paleolithic Diet, Stone Age Diet, Hunter-Gatherer Diet and Caveman Diet. Paleo diets are based on a simple premise – if the cavemen didn’t eat it, you shouldn’t either. (Shades of club-wielding, hunter/gathering Neanderthals.)

A typical Paleo Diet typically includes lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. People swear how healthy it is eating like the Flintstones. Celebs have lined up for it; Jessica Biel, Christina Aguilera, Kobe Bryant, Matthew McConaughey…it must be healthy, right? But here’s the bottom line; the Paleo Diet involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. This reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. What does that mean? Read on.

DANGERS OF THE PALEO DIET: KIDNEY AND HEART DISEASE ANYONE?

        Totally healthy? Hmmm…

-The Paleo Diet calls for the exclusion of all grains…– wheat, rye, barley, oats, corn and brown rice, to name a few.

        Hidden danger?

These grains are great sources of fiber, B vitamins, iron, magnesium and selenium. Grains help our bodies control blood sugar, lower cholesterol and fight the risk of chronic diseases.

        Another hidden danger:

Athletes beware. Without adequate carbs in our diet, our bodies turn to body fat and muscles for energy. This results in the breakdown of muscle mass which is known to increase metabolism and help burn more calories. Burn less calories? Isn’t burning calories the point of weight loss?

-Then there is the restriction of dairy products.

        Hidden danger?

Deficiencies in calcium and vitamin D which are critical to bone health. Think osteoporosis and bone fractures.

-High intake of red meat and saturated fat. (American Heart Association says adults should consume no more than 13 grams of saturated fat per day. On the Paleo Diet, saturated fat intake can approach upwards of 50 grams per day. Do the math).

        Hidden danger?

Can increase risk of kidney and heart disease as well as certain cancers.

Oh, and add to all this the fact that it is bad for vegetarians because the whole diet revolves around eschewing legumes and getting proteins from meat. And because it doesn’t specify the portion of food to be eaten, there is a high chance that you end up eating large portions. A lot to consider.

Dr. Simeons’ HCG Diet Denver: Melba Toast? Are You Kidding?

And so we get to another, even more draconian diet if you can believe it; Dr. Simeons’ HCG Diet. How does 500 calories sound? Fulfilling, huh?

It requires the consumption of only 500 calories daily with only one vegetable per meal and prohibited use of oil, body lotions and hygiene products. And are you ready for this? No medicines or cosmetics other than lipstick, eyebrow pencil and powder may be used without special permission. (Oh, come on, get real). The diet also does not allow exercise. Enough for Ripley’s Believe It or Not. Oh, but Dr. Simeons’ torturous diet does allow for treats; 1 whole breadstick or 1 melba toast. Do they even still sell melba toast? Do you even know what it is? Gee, this must be a great diet to eat out with friends or family. Dr. Simeons’ HCG Diet could be the quintessential fad diet. Can’t you just wait to try it?
