Before accepting a prescription, ask which pharmacy will dispense it and how to contact the pharmacist. Confirm the pharmacy is licensed for your jurisdiction and that the label identifies the exact medicine, directions, storage requirements and expiration or beyond-use date.
Ask the clinic to identify the dispensing pharmacy for your proposed prescription, including its legal name, address, telephone number and applicable license. Verify those details with the relevant state board of pharmacy. A pharmacy listing or license is not a claim that a product is FDA-approved or that a business is LegitScript certified.
Compounded medicines are not FDA-approved. FDA does not review compounded products for safety, effectiveness or quality before marketing. A pharmacy license, registration or accreditation is not FDA approval of a compounded medicine.
Ask why a compounded preparation is being proposed, whether an approved product could meet the need, how quality and sterility are addressed, and whom to contact about an adverse reaction. Do not assume that a customized product is safer or more effective.
